03 festive chapter books for girls (6 and over)
I regularly receive books to review, and here are three new chapter books we’ve enjoyed for young readers:
Magical Kingdom of Birds: The Snow Goose by Anne Booth (Oxford University Press, £5.99)
I’m always fascinated with books that appear to be so engaging that my 7-year-old will like to read them in one sitting, and this is now always the case for the Magical Kingdom of Birds books. The series is recommended for ages 6 and over and celebrates the natural world. In the latest book, main character Maya goes on an adventure, travelling into her fantasy world that she accesses through her garden, to find the Silver Snow Goose that brings winter season to the Magical Kingdom of Birds. With a seasonal theme, I think this fantasy story can make for an ideal winter read for young readers who enjoy chapter books with some black and white illustrations.
The Naughtiest Unicorn at Christmas by Pip Bird (Egmont, £5.99)
To me, it’s always a good sign when I hear my children laughing out loud while reading a book, and that’s why I’ve been eager to write about The Naughtiest Unicorn at Christmas by Pip Bird. The series is recommended for ages 6 and over and follows sweet Mira and her greedy and cheeky unicorn Dave at Unicorn School. In the latest book, the duo is getting ready for the Christmas Show, and while hoping to get the lead roles, they end up playing a worm and a pebble. With unicorn jokes and witty illustrations, this hilarious book will appeal to young readers who enjoy books with silly characters and plots.
Lucy Makes a Wish by Anne Booth (Oxford University Press, £5.99)
For warm and charming winter stories about animals and friendship, young readers should look out for Anne Booth’s series about Lucy, which is also recommended for ages 6 and over. There are now seven books in the series, and in the latest book, Lucy’s grandma is looking after Boots the puppy after its previous owner realises she’s allergic to dogs. While they’re looking for a new home for Boots, Lucy becomes close to the puppy and hopes her friend’s family can take the little dog. The 160-page long chapter book features some black and white illustrations, and will make an ideal winter read for animal lovers and fans of the Holly Webb puppy books.
