03 funny graphic novels for kids
Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea by Ben Clanton (Egmont, £5.99)
For young readers transitioning to chapter books, I’ve come to love Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea by Ben Clanton. With super sweet characters and funny storylines, the books in this series takes readers on a delightful journey under the sea. There are three stories in each of the four books, short and snappy dialogue and text in capital letters.
Claude Comic Capers by Alex T Smith (Hodder Children’s Books, £7.99)
The latest book from Claude creator Alex T Smith Claude Comic Capers is a funny graphic novel with four comic-strip adventures about the likeable Claude dog and his trusted companion Sir Bobblysock. The book, published in March, is around 150 pages long and sees Claude taking a shot at being a detective, superhero, nurse and police officer. The text is in capital letters.
Dog Man by Day Pilkey (Scholastic, £8.99)
The Dog Man comic books by Dav Pilkey, the creator of Captain Underpants, follow the madcap adventures of a half dog, half man police officer. Readers can expect silly plots, plenty of laughs, and a bit of toilet humour in these chunky comic books. For parents, it’s worth noting that the first book, for example, starts with a bomb explosion and there is incorrect spelling and grammar in the text in these popular books. (The age recommendation is older than for the other books written about in this post)
