03 of my favourite new picture books
I regularly receive children’s books to review, and these are three of my favourites of recent new titles I’ve received:
The Way Home for Wolf by Rachel Bright and illustrated by Jim Field (Orchard Books, £12.99)
I might have had an emotional moment, but I could feel my throat tightening and tears starting to well up in my eyes the first time I read The Way Home for Wolf. The book, which is by the author of The Lion Inside and The Koala Who Could, tells the story of wolf cub Wilf who gets lost in the snow and discovers that sometimes we all need help to get back on track. With rhyming text and beautiful illustrations, I think this is a heart-warming book with an uplifting message–a book I would read again and again.
The Way Home for Wolf is coming out on 4 October.
Steve, Terror of the Seas by Megan Brewis (Oxford University Press, £6.99)
For a picture book with an unpredictable plot that I didn’t see coming, I like Steve, Terror of the Seas. The book tells the story about Steve, who scares away all the other fishes apart from his good friend George, and Steve is struggling to understand why everyone else is afraid of him. Steve, Terror of the Seas is both funny and educational, and at the end there is a page with facts that explain the plot in the story. A brilliant choice for children learning about life under sea.
Steve, Terror of the Seas was published on 5 July.
Oscar the Hungry Unicorn by Lou Carter and illustrated by Nikki Dyson (Orchard Books, £6.99)
The book Oscar the Hungry Unicorn simply makes me laugh. It tells the story about Oscar the Unicorn who has eaten his stable and needs to find a new home, which is tricky for a hungry unicorn who eats everything in sight. I like the fact that this cute and charming book has a deeper message about friendship and belonging, but it is also funny and sparkly with bold and colourful illustrations and a dose of magic.
Oscar the Hungry Unicorn was published on 20 September.
