03 things to do in London with kids for May half-term 2019
Children’s afternoon tea with storytelling at The Langham
There’s yet another reason to take the children to The Langham for afternoon tea this half-term, as the hotel will be hosting a special children’s afternoon tea event with children’s author and illustrator Benji Davies on 27 May. At noon that day Davies will be reading extracts from some of his books, including Grandpa’s Island, Grandma Bird and The Storm Whale (The event requires advance booking). The Langham offers children’s afternoon tea with Daunt Books every day from noon to 5.30pm, and young restaurant-goers get to choose a book to take home from the specially curated Daunt Books library in the dining room. A cute treat to inspire a love of reading!
Explore Chelsea in Bloom
Take a stroll around Chelsea and marvel at the stunning flower displays until Saturday 25 May. As part of the annual floral art show Chelsea in Bloom, many shops and restaurants have transformed their shop windows and entrances with outstanding flower displays, and walking around the area to see these can be inspiring for both young and old. The theme this year is Under the Sea and I would recommend families with young children to focus on the streets near Sloane Square–such as Pavilion Road or Duke of York Square–where there are typically a number of impressive flower arrangements to see and pose in front without too much walking in between. Another favourite of mine is breakfast at the smart Ivy Chelsea Garden, which is incredibly Instagrammable this week.
Visit the Gruffalo pop-up shop in Covent Garden
On Saturday 25 May a new Gruffalo pop-up shop celebrating the 20th anniversary of the book opens in Covent Garden, and it will only be open for half-term, with the last day being Saturday 1 June. The pop-up gift shop will be selling Gruffalo books, toys and limited edition merchandise, and there will be various events throughout the week, including arts and crafts activities aimed at children aged 3 to 8 and costume character meet and greets. In addition, there will be screenings of the Gruffalo film and other animations based on books by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Tickets are free and need to be booked online.
