03 top tips for making personalised Mother’s Day gifts at Sammy Duder
‘I paint your hand, mummy!’
I had tried to give Baby Girl instructions for what to make for me for Mother’s Day during our painting session at the welcoming Battersea pottery studio Sammy Duder, which we had been invited to, but she had her own plans for what to make.
The good news is that I like her creative spirit, and the team at Sammy Duder is fantastic at finding ways to make the pottery look really special, so Baby Girl’s idea actually seemed quite good.
Here are three top ideas for making Mother’s Day pottery gifts at Sammy Duder – including one courtesy of Baby Girl:
Mum and daughter/son handprints:
Baby Girl wanted to have both our handprints on her Mother’s Day pottery. This worked really well on a dinner plate, and Harriet at Sammy Duder helped us choose colours that would work and painted both our hands to get it right. Having my hand underneath and then Baby Girl’s hand on top in a darker colour ended up looking really sweet, and I know I’ll love using this plate.
A special quote
Since Sammy Duder offers a unique writing service, we decided to have one of the sentences Baby Girl regularly says painted onto the dinner plate for us. At the top of the plate, it will say: “We are best friends, mummy!” I also saw examples of pottery with ‘Happy Mother’s Day!’ on, or short quotes about why mums are special. Alternatively, the pottery could have a list of adjectives describing mum, such as caring and loving. Mother’s Day gifts to treasure!
A painting of mummy
The original plan, which was Sammy’s fun idea, was to have Baby Girl paint me on the plate. She’s made simple drawings of her family before, and can do heads, eyes and mouths, but as soon as she got the paint she wanted to do it her own way. Next year, I’ll want to try have her paint me on a framed tile or plate. This could be a super cute Mother’s Day present!
