06 creative activities for kids in London this Easter
1. Join Fairy School at The Fairy Treehouse
The Fairy Treehouse on Webb’s Road in Battersea is opening its doors in April, and the new fairy-themed birthday party venue and event space by Fairytale Friends will be hosting Fairy School sessions on Sunday 2 April. I used to take Big Girl to fairy dance classes with Fairytale Friends, and we also went to a Fairy School workshop, which she really enjoyed, completely immersed in the magical experience of dancing with Fairy Blossom. Tickets for a 1.5-hour Fairy School workshop is £16 per child, and the sessions are recommended for children aged 3 to 8 years.
2. Take the robotics Easter challenge at National Army Museum
The National Army Museum in Chelsea reopens on 30 March, and over Easter the newly refurbished museum will host robotics Easter challenges designed to teach families about how the army uses technology. Children can try different missions, such as using robotic arms to fill a basket of Easter eggs. There are 45-minute sessions every day and booking is recommended. The National Army Museum’s new 175.5 sqm Play Base will also be welcoming 0-8 year old visitors for soft play and other activities in an immersive base camp with an assault course and role-play areas including a Cookhouse, a Quarter Master’s Store, a Field Training Area and a Command Liaison Vehicle. Each session lasts an hour and costs £4.50 per child.
3. Make board games at London Transport Museum
London Transport Museum launched its refurbished children’s All Aboard Zone (see picture at the top) in 2015, and it’s become one of my favourite family-friendly London museums. Over Easter London Transport Museum is hosting family activities inspired by the current Designology exhibition, and children can create transport-themed board games. The sessions take place from 11.30am and from 2.30pm and last up to an hour.
4. Take a boys ballet masterclass at the Royal Academy of Dance
On Sunday 2 April Royal Academy of Dance on Battersea Square is running ballet masterclasses for boys aged 7 and over with basic ballet technique. The masterclasses, led by the RAD Male Dance Ambassador Iain Mackay, who is also a principal dancer at Birmingham Royal Ballet, are aimed at encouraging confidence-building, sociability and creativity while developing technique, choreography, coordination and presentation. Tickets are £24 per child, and the masterclasses will also run in Edinburgh on 30 April and Birmingham on 7 July.
5. Paint pottery at Sammy Duder
A morning or afternoon of pottery painting is always a highlight for little artists, and I’ve enjoyed collaborating with pottery studio Sammy Duder for several years. Big Girl loves coming to Sammy’s welcoming Battersea studio, painting mugs, plates or something unique like a photo frame to keep in her room. Sammy Duder offers a unique writing service, which is great for making the artworks look extra special.
6. Take clay or art workshops at Kite Studios
From 7 to 9 April the charming Kite Studios is hosting free one-hour clay taster sessions as part of Hey Clay, the national celebration of clay organised by the Crafts Council. Kite Studios also has Easter holiday art workshops for children aged 4 and older. Four to eight-year-olds can do one and a half-hour sessions in the mornings, introducing them to a new art activity in a proper art studio, which seems like a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of London.
