06 tips for getting ready for a new school year
Getting the uniform ready is always at the top of the to-do list before school starts back in September, but here are a few other things I’ve tried to get done too:
1. Buy school shoes and trainers
Little feet seem to grow rapidly over the summer holidays, and I routinely buy new shoes for September. This year, I’ve been to Papouelli in Parsons Green and Trotters in Northcote Road to stock up on both school shoes and trainers.
2. Keep a supply of sticker name labels
I started sewing on labels many years ago, but gave up quickly. I now rely on sticker name labels, and I usually order them from MyNametags. Sticker labels are useful for anything from snack boxes and scissors to clothing and rucksacks. Quick and practical.
3. Review stationery needs
If pencil cases and stationery is needed, it is always worth going through the existing supply. Other mums have told me about cool finds like personalised pencils, and flexible or foldable 30cm rulers that fit in the pencil case. For young children, I like the grip on Lyra Groove pencils, which we’ve found in Perry’s Art+Office on Fulham Road.
4. Book hair appointments and review hair accessories
I’ve learnt that it’s best to book children’s hair appointments early at this time of year when many families have haircuts on their to-do lists. In addition, it’s a good time to consider stocking up on suitable hair accessories for girls.
5. Consider magazine subscriptions
September is often a good time to re-think magazine subscriptions, and for older children, there are several popular news magazines. I can’t wait to take a look at the weekly newspaper First News, which is recommended for children aged 7 to 14, and The Week Junior, a current affairs magazine recommended for children aged 8 to 14.
6. Check water bottles and lunch boxes
For children who bring water bottles or lunch boxes to school or classes, these might be worth taking a second look at too. I’ve liked the quality of the Camelbak bottles, with the Camelbak Kids Eddy bottles being popular with young children. The other day I was also eyeing the Dopper bottles in Fulham’s Indian Summer. There are so many cool options nowadays.
