0Assessing fire safety at home with help of London Fire Brigade
When I found my Moleskine pregnancy diary from my first pregnancy the other day, I noticed I’d written a long list of things we had to do before Baby Girl’s arrival, and one of those things was to install a smoke alarm in her bedroom.
What I didn’t know then was that I could also have contacted the local fire services to arrange a fire safety visit. This excellent tip was mentioned to me by a black cab driver once, and he recommended me to do this when moving houses last year.
I contacted our local London fire services to request an appointment on one of the first days in our new house, and I couldn’t have been happier with the service. Baby Girl was pretty pleased too, as the firemen parked their fire engine right outside and the team of three firemen coming in to inspect our house were all in uniform, which was clearly exciting.
The friendly firemen looked at smoke alarms, gave me recommendations for how to prevent fire and answered all my questions about fire safety. They also advised on escape routes and what to do in the event of an emergency, and they installed brand new smoke alarms in Baby Girl’s new room and on a landing where they thought there should have been one.
This service was free, and I think it is a fantastic offering from the London Fire Brigade. A home visit like this can be extremely useful for families with young children who want to ensure they do everything they can to prevent fire and be as prepared as possible in the event of any unforeseen emergencies.
Love London!
