Review: Bespoke kids birthday cakes by Sweet Prelude for exquisite details and creative designs

‘Super cute! We can’t wait to see the cake on Saturday!’
When Carolina from Fulham-based cake company Sweet Prelude emailed me a picture of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet on Thursday, I got incredibly excited. The fondant characters she had made for a cake she was sending me to review looked adorable, and after seeing them I knew I would love the finished product.
I didn’t know how much I would love the cake though. The finished cake had more tiny details than any bespoke children’s birthday party cake I’ve seen before. and it made a fantastic centrepiece for Baby Boy’s first birthday.

Carolina had suggested she could create a Winnie the Pooh picnic themed cake to tie in with the Winnie the Pooh themed birthday and teddy bear picnic entertainment at the party, and the cake didn’t only feature the group of friends sitting down for a picnic, but it also had all the picnic details, like tiny sandwiches, a fruit platter, a cake, a ladybird and a little hot dog. We were amazed with how Carolina had managed to make these tiny details, which could only really be done by an extremely dexterous and talented pastry chef.
Party-goers also agreed the fondant cake, which was a Victoria sponge cake surrounded by several mini cupcakes, tasted great. It had been made with fluffy buttercream and home made jam, making it moist and tasty, and I was glad to have taken Carolina’s advice and chosen a fondant-friendly cake, which could be stored outside the fridge for the day.
The only challenge now will be to meet family cake expectations going forward. Three-year-old Big Girl–who stole Piglet’s ears as soon as we’d cut the cake–has loved having the cake at home and has continued to eat the leftovers, picking out all her favourite little iced details.
True cake love!

Sweet Prelude is a newly opened cake company in Fulham founded by pastry chef Carolina Leite, who has previously worked in pastry shops, cake shops and hotels, including Claridge’s. The menu includes cupcakes and cakes in a large variety of flavours, and Carolina was very helpful in advising on what to choose and incredibly service-minded, sending pictures after she had started creating the characters to keep us involved in the making of the cake.
