0Best London attractions for families with young children
London Transport Museum
London Transport Museum in Covent Garden has two new and impressive play areas aimed at children up to 7 years old with everything from a soft play corner for pre-walkers and a river boat with a cafe for pretend play to a real bus and a space where children can try their tube engineering skills. The museum also boasts historic trams and buses to climb in an out of and a tube and a modern bus children can sit in and steer. The layout is also ideal for families, as it is very open, so it’s great for little ones to run around and easy for mums to find each other if children run off in different directions. There’s also a family stamping trail in the museum, which Baby Girl also showed interest in this time around. With the addition of the fun and well-thought through transport-themed play areas, London Transport Museum has become my very favourite museum for young children in London.
SEA LIFE London Aquarium
When speaking to friends about London attractions, one dad said London Aquarium on Southbank is his favourite and I completely understand why. SEA LIFE London Aquarium is fascinating to visit for all age groups due to glass walkways and tunnels, touch pools, feeding opportunities and a fun new penguin display. Visitors can get up close to thousands of sea creatures on display, and this attraction is not just about children, but it is brilliant to go as a family and even toddlers enjoy seeing the colourful and varied fish displays.
Science Museum
London’s Science Museum in South Kensington is another museum with impressive, interactive play areas, but visitors have to know where to go to find the top attractions for children in this huge museum. For preschoolers, it’s all about The Garden, a room in the basement of the Science Museum which has been designed to encourage children aged 3 to 6 to learn about science through play. It includes a water play area and massive building blocks, and there are fun sections where children can learn about texture, sound, light and shadows. For us, the highlight is the water play area, which is the most impressive indoor water play area I’ve seen, and I like that there are aprons on hand to cover up little ones to avoid them getting too wet.
