Celebrating new Quentin Blake murals at the Science Museum

‘Where is BFG?’

The other evening we had been invited to the launch of a series of new Quentin Blake art work created specifically for the Science Museum, and three-year-old Big Boy was walking around demanding to see his very favourite character these days – BFG. But the new Science Museum art works shows a different side of Quentin Blake’s talent. This time it is not about the much-loved fictional characters but great women and men that have changed the world.

The illustrations, which are in Quentin Blake’s unique style, were unveiled in October and are displayed on five large panels outside the interactive Wonderlab: the Equinor Gallery, which can be a fantastic part of the museum to visit with children. The panels feature 20 late scientists and engineers from the museum’s historical collection, and the illustrations of the individuals also include items relating to their achievements

I think these new illustrations will be great conversation-starters, and perhaps also give visitors ideas for what areas of the huge museum that they should go to next.

We particularly enjoyed seeing several women we knew from books included in the art works, and some of the ones we ended up talking more about were Ada Lovelace–a pioneer of the computer age–and Amy Johnson–the first female pilot to fly solo from the UK to Australia.

Next time I go to the Science Museum I will try to make sure we explore exhibits relating to some of the famous people that inspire us.

To accompany the new murals, the Science Museum is also launching a new range of merchandise by Quentin Blake which will feature the same art work.
