Coping with reflux

When Daddy T called me on Tuesday he had already been to three different pharmacies. None of them had what he was looking for.

He started talking about using a home delivery service, which would ensure we would get the medicine sent to us the same evening. But I didn’t really understand the rush.

Baby Girl had seemed unhappy at times in the last few days, but we had still been advised to wait and see one more day before potentially starting her on her reflux medication. She had been crying during feeds, and we had been told it could be a case of a bit of reflux coupled with the milk flowing too quickly for her. In addition to getting the prescription, we were advised to burp her more often and keep her  in a more upright position during and after feeds.

The problem was that Daddy T had only had four hours of sleep the night before. He wasn’t exactly eager to hold off and monitor the situation. It was a top priority for him to get Baby Girl’s medicine straight away, as he was not taking any risks with more sleepless nights.

But since the pharmacies around his office were all out of the reflux medicine, I guess he’s not alone. There must be a lot of dads like him in The City – sleep-deprived and terribly eager to fix the problem.

Hey, i think my little man has this – what medication have you been recommended?

Hi Claire, we’ve been recommended Ranitidine. But she actually did seem to get a better after I made other simple changes, so I haven’t given it to her yet.

I was advised to have her sitting in my lap when breastfeeding her. She’s still slightly leaned backwards and her tummy is facing my tummy, but she’s more upright.

I’ve also been burping her even more often – every time she falls off the breast I now burp her – and I try to walk around with her in an upright position after every feed.

In addition, we’ve put a towel under her moses basket, a mattress we keep on her baby gym and her changing mattress, so she’s slightly tilted when she lies down.

    Good luck!

    Tine
