0Cranial osteopathy for releasing tension in babies
On Friday, we had booked an appointment for Baby Girl with a cranial osteopath although I had no idea what a cranial osteopath was. I had been meaning to read about it before going there, but in the end, the only time I found a spare minute to do some research was in the car on the way to the appointment when we were already five minutes late.
I was trying to flick through the Wikipedia entry for osteopathy on my iPhone at the same time as I was plotting in the address to the clinic in the navigation system.
Luckily, cranial osteopathy did seem to make sense and the treatment seemed to be very gentle. Although I wasn’t an expert on it before we came, I did feel we had done the right thing by bringing Baby Girl to John Carr at Clapham Osteopathic Practice.
It was our maternity consultant Hattie who had recommended us to take her there. Cranial osteopathy could apparently help release tension in the neck and spine, which can be particularly useful to c-section babies who might have been shocked by the birth experience.
Baby Girl usually turns her head to the right when she sleeps, a sign that she might have some tension in the neck. In her case, the osteopath said the tension was probably caused by her having had her head turned to the right when she was in the womb.
After her session, she was meant to wake up to the world, and have her system flushed, which could also help clear her jaundice and sticky eyes.
She has been fretting more when trying to go to sleep in the last two days, so I’m not sure I’m thrilled about the ‘waking up’. But if this is what’s best for Baby Girl, I’ll happily sit through hours of fretting. She’s excused.
