0Visiting ‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’ at Kensington Palace with kids
This weekend I’ve tried putting my ice skates to good use, as the ice skating season at the Natural History Museum Ice Rink was coming to an end, and earlier this month it was the Diana: Her Fashion Story exhibition at Kensington Palace I finally managed to tick off before it is due to close in February.
I had long been thinking about visiting Kensington Palace to see the collection of dresses, which has been on display at the historic venue since February 2017, and at the beginning of January I finally made it there.
After entering the palace, we followed the signs to the Diana exhibition, and started our visit by exploring the galleries displaying Diana’s dresses – many which I remember from pictures of the popular princess.
In fact, the exhibition features some of her most famous outfits, and it also includes some of the sketches from the design process.
While admiring the glamorous outfits, we also learnt more about fashion in the 80s and Diana’s choice of designers and styles in different phases of her life.
I think Diana: Her Fashion Story makes this a particularly unique time to visit Kensington Palace with children who may have been too young to appreciate it when the exhibition first opened, or may now be fascinated by learning about a real princess and seeing the dresses.
In the gift shop, we also discovered a book, which appeals to young visitors who are curious about real princesses. The non-fiction paperback Palace Princesses (£5.99) is a colourful book with facts about princesses connected to the Historic Palaces, and Diana is featured in this book too.
After finishing our Kensington Palace excursion, we continued our day in style at the The Milestone Hotel, which is only a short walk from Kensington Palace. The hotel’s Stables Bar made for a cozy spot for relaxing with a scone and tea, and I quickly felt I was holidaying far from the busy streets of London.
Families planning ahead can also book a Prince and Princess children’s afternoon tea (£26 per child) served in a restaurant at The Milestone Hotel.
Diana: Her Fashion Story is open until 17 February.
