Discovering The Secret Garden half-term experience

With holiday plans constantly changing this year, I’m always on the look-out for at-home activities, and that’s why I was excited to read about The Secret Garden experience for May half term.

To dive into Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic about Mary leaving India and coming to the UK to live with her uncle, families can buy one of 2,000 special half-term Secret Garden boxes by Wizard Presents, which launched the project after cutting short their theatrical tour of the show last year.

Wizard Presents, in association with Watford Palace Theatre and Oxford Playhouse, have adapted their 2020 production of The Secret Garden into a multi-media experience in a box. With a secret key, families taking a box will get a chance to uncover surprises over half-term to delve into the beloved story.

The experience, which is designed to start on 31 May, includes serialised audio episodes with soundscape and original music composed by Arun Ghosh; online games and augmented reality; and activities that can be enjoyed at home, such as clay modelling, skipping games, bee house-making and letter writing. Three lucky families will also receive a golden key in their box and receive an extra prize.

For adults, the boxes include an In Conversation series featuring Wizard Presents’ artistic director Danyah Miller (photo at the top) speaking to special guests to explore some of the issues raised in the story.

The Secret Garden experience is £25 per box.
