0Planning a space-themed half term for kids
Me to the taxi driver: ‘We’re going to Belgravia’
Big Girl to me: ‘Is Belgravia on Planet Earth, mummy?’
Three-year-old Big Girl is all about space these days, and after talking to other mums I don’t think she’s the only preschooler obsessed with planets and rockets. Here are three tips for how to create a special half-term holiday for everyone who’s learning about space these days:
Fun Joules space backpack and t-shirt
Clothing and homeware brand Joules, which I’m collaborating with on this post, has a fun, blue t-shirt (£17.95) with a rocket print at the back and a cool rucksack (£32.95) with rocket shapes and flames. The t-shirt seems like something a little boy would pick out as a favourite and the rucksack is both unique and practical. A great half term look!
Entertaining space books
If the rainy weather continues, entertaining little ones over half-term may be hard work and some fun books can always come in handy. Big Girl recently received the board book Look Inside space (Usborne, £9.99) as a gift from a friend, and this book features colourful illustrations, fun facts and more than 70 flaps. It’s a brilliant book for young children interested in space, and I can see us referring back to this for several years to come. Another favourite book series for the age group is the convertible range from Miles Kelly, and Big Girl has previously given away the Convertible spaceship (Miles Kelly, £17.99) as a birthday present to a friend. Fantastic for pretend play!
Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age exhibition at Science Museum
In autumn we visited London’s Science Museum and the Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age exhibition, which we’d been invited to by ao.com, and the exhibition showcases the most significant collection of Russian spacecraft and artefacts ever to be shown in the UK. I think the exhibition is good for letting children see space gadgets and artefacts, bringing what they’ve learnt in school to life. Cosmonauts is open until 13 March.
