2A family weekend at The Wild Rabbit in the Cotswolds
“Thank you mummy and daddy for taking me to the holiday”
Baby Girl managed to melt Daddy T’s heart the other weekend. He had first felt we’d made a mistake when taking her to beautiful Cotswolds inn The Wild Rabbit after she had been a bit hard work, running around the restaurant and not feeling like sitting still for one second on the first day. But his mood soon changed after a beautiful and eventful day in the surrounding area, which had clearly been exciting for Baby Girl.
The stylish The Wild Rabbit, owned by the family behind Daylesford Organic, is as chic as other Daylesford properties. It boasts a stunning outdoor area with a fire and natural wooden furniture, reminding me of luxurious properties in California’s Napa Valley, and a sleek restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows mixing rustic and contemporary.
We were surprised there was no food service between 3-7pm in the evening, meaning the only food we could order when Baby Girl usually has her dinner was a salami and cheese plate. With older children or a baby, the dinner service wouldn’t have been an issue though. The food was still delicious, including the juicy steaks cooked in the kitchen’s Josper oven, and the cosy pub section was a lovely place to hang out before dinner. We also enjoyed the large sunny terraces, which were buzzing in the beautiful weather, and Baby Girl was fascinated with the terrace resident–a large peacock hen called Penelope, who apparently turned up a year ago and has never left The Wild Rabbit since.
The rooms look country chic with exposed stone walls, stripped beams, natural stone bathrooms and beautiful linen fabrics. There are cot beds available to book, and the Kingham location is ideal for exploring picturesque Cotswolds villages and family attractions.
It’s also worth knowing that there’s a small play area with four swings and a roundabout a few minutes walk from The Wild Rabbit (opposite another local favourite The Kingham Plough), a village shop next to the inn, bikes available to borrow, including children’s bikes, high chairs in the restaurant, and some fresh milk on a thermos in the mini bar in the room.
In the restaurant, there was no children’s menu per se, but dishes were adapted to suit Baby Girl, and when she had tomato pasta with cheese it was served within minutes. Friends staying at The Wild Rabbit have also been fine using a baby monitor in the restaurant, but we decided to go to bed early, watching a film on the iPad after Baby Girl had gone to sleep.
I couldn’t have faulted The Wild Rabbit if we’d gone as a couple or with a baby, but for us right now it’s easier when dinner service opens an hour earlier. Baby Girl, however, was clearly still chuffed with her weekend escape, and at one point she even wanted to have a hot chocolate on the terrace instead of going on the swings. Bliss!
Hi Tine – Do they provide cots for the child? Thanks!
Yes, they do provide cots for free. We hadn’t booked one in advance, as my initial plan was to have her in our bed, but they still managed to find us one when I realised that it would be quite convenient to have a cot bed in the room! Tine x
