0How to create a unique Christmas wreath with kids in mind
‘We need one of those, mummy!’
Three-year-old Big Girl loves everything about Christmas, and after many of our Fulham neighbours have decorated their front doors with Christmas wreaths, she’s been concerned about our door looking plain and boring. But this afternoon she’s in for a surprise.
I was asked by online platform homify, which can be a good source for Christmas decorating ideas, to share my own decoration ideas, and it was the perfect opportunity to get the much-missed wreath sorted.
Last year, I bought a plain Christmas wreath and decorated it with dried slices of oranges, cinnamon sticks and some other Christmas-themed flower arranging accessories, and this year we bought a decorated wreath with the view to add further decorations to personalise it and make it our own.
I’ve noticed that the wreaths Big Girl seems to like the best boast cute Christmas-themed decorations, ideally decorations with eyes and a smiley face, so I searched through our Christmas decoration box and found some homemade gnomes we weren’t using anymore, which fit her brief. I also found a wooden Christmas tag, a fox made in felt, a piece of red ribbon and some paper mache stars Big Girl had painted, which I also wanted to use. Decorations made by kids can make a wreath extra special, and I know Big Girl will be excited to see her contribution to the Christmas wreath.
With the help of basic floral tools and accessories, including Oasis green hobby wire, a pair of scissors or a mini glue gun, it is incredibly quick and easy to customise a plain wreath and create a truly unique Christmas decoration for the door. I used wire, available from Hobbycraft, and twisted one piece around each item before attaching the wires to the wreath. It took me around 15 minutes to finish it off, and since I know how much Big Girl will love the outcome, I think it was time well spent.
A true family project and a festive Christmas wreath to please every family member!
