How to get baby’s room dark at sleep time

We can’t actually only blame the light for the fact that we’re struggling to get Baby Girl to bed by seven these days. When she realises it’s nearing bedtime, she starts pulling out new toys or running around in the garden, winning some more time. But she still tends to understand play time is over when we get her room dark.

That’s why I would always recommend soon-to-be parents to consider lighting in the nursery. I remember reading about this when I was pregnant with Baby Girl, and when I discussed it with Grandma N, she said not to get too fussed about it. I had apparently always slept in a light room.

But for us, it has been worth taking a few easy steps to get the room dark. We’ve found it a lot easier to put Baby Girl to sleep in a dark room, which she now appears to associate with sleep time.

When she was a newborn, we had dark grey roman blinds with blackout lining in her room, but there was light coming in on the sides, so we couldn’t get it completely dark during the day. To solve the issue, we bought the Gro Anywhere Blind, portable blackout blinds with suction cups to attach straight on the glass.

Now we don’t need the extra blinds anymore, but I wouldn’t have been without when she was a newborn.

The blinds, also recommended for travelling, didn’t look particularly pretty in her room, and I didn’t bother taking them up and down all the time, but it was worth making a sacrifice for a short period of time.

Anything for a bit of peace!
