0How to protect baby in the sun
When Baby Girl was four months old, we did one week of daily walks on the beach with her sitting in a BabyBjorn baby carrier and wearing a thin cotton onesie, pink Babiators and a Jacadi sun hat.
We were on holiday on Vanderbilt Beach in Naples in Florida, and since she hadn’t turned six months yet we were very worried about putting sunscreen on her and tried ensuring she was only in the shade instead. This meant we could go on relaxing walks down the beach – but then had to be super quick getting back up to the hotel when walking the other direction and had her facing the sun.
For anyone with a similar baby beach problem this summer, I’ve been excited to learn that French brand Mustela, which specialises in baby and pregnancy skincare products, has a suncare range that has been developed to be suitable from birth. This is not the case with most sunscreens, and many appear to be aimed at children aged either six months and older, or one year and older.
I’ve not been in a situation where Baby Boy has needed sun cream yet, as he’s been in the shade, but I think it’s good to have the option for babies too if taking a little one on holiday–and planning on walking in both directions on the beach.
I’ve received a few samples from Mustela, which Baby Girl and I have tried, and I like that the Mustela sun creams offer high protection without being rich and making me look completely white like many kids sun creams do.
The Mustela Very High Protection Sun Lotion and Sun Spray, which are based on an organo-mineral sun cream system that ensures very high UVB (SPF 50+) and UVA protection (25PPD), feel moisturising and smooth on delicate skin and a thin layer seems to be all that’s needed. They are quite runny, so the lotion is a bit easy to spill and I think the Sun Spray is the easiest one to use on toddlers who have a tendency to run off.
We’ve used the Mustela sun cream a lot this month, and it’s been very effective, keeping us all safe in the sun. When we’re ready to move Baby Boy’s bouncer out of the shade, he can try some too!
