1Learning Spanish with Bilingual Beats baby and toddler classes in London
‘Hola!’
Baby Girl was in her pretend shop again and suddenly greeted me in Spanish. She keeps impressing me with different languages she picks up, and it turns out doing weekly Spanish and French lessons in addition to speaking Norwegian at home and English in nursery is absolutely fine for a 2.5-year-old.
I was originally worried Baby Girl would be confused if introducing too many languages, but I decided we could give Bilingual Beats, a foreign language and music class for under 5s, a try any way, so she now has weekly lessons.
And she seems to love it. I went to one lesson with her at Coopers Arms in Chelsea to see what it was all about, and the teacher kept the little ones entertained throughout by getting them up on their feet dancing, singing and repeating words. We were pretending to be dragons, and Baby Girl and other little ones in the class were asked to repeat words one by one in between the activities.
There were musical instruments, a parachute to hide under and a variety of examples of fruit to learn new words.
The children were given a lot of encouragement and it seemed like a really positive experience. Baby Girl didn’t want to leave by the end of the lesson, and she kept saying: “No, mummy. I want to do more Bilingual Beats” when I tried dragging her out the room and back down the stairs of the Flood Street pub.
There were a mix of babies and toddlers in the beginners class, and although not all of them were speaking yet, the mums helped repeat words for them. In fact, it was one of those classes where I learnt something too. I had a few years of Spanish in school, and Bilingual Beats was a useful refresher.
Perhaps it should be me who should buy a Bilingual Beats CD and activity book and start singing in Spanish in the car!
Bilingual Beats runs Spanish music classes in Clapham, Chelsea, Kensington, Islington, Swiss Cottage, and in addition, French classes are currently offered in Swiss Cottage
Hi my son turned 1 in August but I’m interested in him learning Spanish from a young age – I have family background on my father’s side but I was never taught it growing up but I’d like my son to be taught from a young age.
