0Celebrating Lego City Volcano range at The Geological Society in London
The other day I learnt something new. I learnt that I’ve passed The Geological Society in London every day for years without noticing it, and I learnt that new Lego volcano kits and minifigures have been out travelling with a world famous volcanologist.
Big Girl, Baby Boy and I had been invited to celebrate the new Lego City Volcano Explorers range at The Geological Society near Green Park and at the event we met Andrès Ruzo, the South American geothermal scientist and National Geographic explorer. He presented photographs from his geological adventures, featuring Lego sets from the new Lego City volcano range.
Baby Boy was doing exploring on his own during the presentation, but Big Girl was keen to follow the presentation, excited to see Lego minifigures, pictures of lava and volcano explorer sites.
Being taught about volcanoes from a passionate explorer was pretty unique. Despite chasing Baby Boy down the aisles, I felt I gained more insight into the role of explorers, and this is also highlighted by the Lego range. I didn’t immediately think of base camps and special vehicles when thinking about volcanos before- but I certainly do now.
The biggest kit in the new series is a Volcano Exploration Base (£79.99), which not only features a volcano with an eruption function but also includes a mobile operation centre with a lab, a drone and more – all teaching children about nature, science and volcano expeditions.
Looking at the new range, it struck me that these sets are not only cool construction toys with trucks and machinery, but they have a real educational value since they are geology-inspired, appear realistic and take the theme one step further than what I remember from school by focusing on equipment used for exploring lava and volcanoes.
Great gifts for budding scientists and explorers!
