03 Christmas events in the heart of London
Customise Christmas with Christmas on Regent Street
Today marked the opening of Customise Christmas on Regent Street, where there is a complimentary Christmas hub in Quadrant Arcade designed to help shoppers make the gifts they’ve purchased extra special. The hub, open on 1, 2, 8 and 9 December, features London-based embossers Krintech, which can personalise notebooks, luggage tags and other small leather good presents, and calligrapher, Lucy Edmonds of Quill London, who can write names on snow-white gift tags. There will also be a special gift-wrapping service where gifts can be wrapped in custom-made Regent Street paper. In addition, families can enjoy bauble decorating classes hosted by The Crafty Hen and a photo booth to take photos against a hand-drawn sketch of Regent Street.
Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Trafalgar Square
Before becoming a mum I used to like going to see the lighting of the Christmas tree at Trafalgar Square, but I’m yet to take Big Girl to the event. For families with older children, however, I think the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Trafalgar Square is a wonderful free London event that’s bound to get Londoners in the spirit of Christmas. The tree is a gift from Norway every year, a tradition started in 1974 to mark Norway’s gratitude for Britain’s support during World War II. The tree will be lit by the Mayor of Westminster, Norwegian Ambassador and governing Mayor of Oslo today, and the ceremony, featuring carol singing by The Salvation Army and the St Martin-in-the-Fields choir, starts at 6pm.
LEGO and Virtual Reality Christmas in Covent Garden
In Covent Garden, brick-building fans can enjoy the new LEGO Christmas build, which has arrived on the piazza. This year’s display is a Santa’s Workshop build made with over 700,000 LEGO bricks, and featuring LEGO elves and Santa, who is busy filling the sack with LEGO Christmas presents. There’s also an augmented reality Santa experience in Covent Garden, powered by Blippar, which is free to book HERE or by going to 3 The Market Building, Covent Garden until 24 December. As part of the experience, children can step into an alternate festive land to meet Santa, enhanced by the power of augmented reality and visual discovery app Blippar.
