Why London mums need the very best neighbours

When growing up I remember neighbours asking for a candle after a power cut and someone asking for an ingredient they had run out of in the middle of a baking project, but I don’t think we ever ran errands for neighbours.

London is different though.

With no relatives around, it is my lovely neighbour who’s the first to receive a call when the strain of being home alone with two kids takes its toll on me.

When my active toddler Baby Boy fell on the staircase and I wanted to get him checked out for peace of mind, my neighbour friend helped with the school run. When Big Girl had a painful tongue with blisters after an allergic reaction, the same neighbour picked up Piriton and Bonjela on her way home, saving me from strapping two kids in the car after bedtime and driving to an open pharmacy.

As mums of young children, we agreed there’s never a dull moment. But for me, it is having the very best neighbours who kindly offer to help out when I’m feeling overwhelmed and frustrated make all the difference in the world. It makes London a fantastic place to live even without grandparents and uncles and aunts who are there when it matters the most.

In fact, it’s no coincidence that pre-BA cancelling Saturday flights we were now meant to have been holidaying with the neighbours too.

Sticking together!

That’s lovely, we don’t speak much to the neighbours beyond the odd friendly ‘hello’ in passing. But we have family around to bare some of the brunt – you’re lucky to have such nice ones, it’s a bit of a lottery I guess!
