Making homemade Mother’s Day gifts with Homebase

Last Wednesday I was lying on the artificial grass in our garden painting 12 white tiles in a warm yellow colour. I was setting up a crafts table for a play date, and after receiving some art material from Homebase I was inspired to go buy lots more and let Big Girl and friends have a go at making personalised coasters for Mother’s Day.

I figured it was best if I did the painting. I used the Home of Colour Onecoat 75ml Tester (£1.49) Homebase had sent and was thrilled to see the tiles dry quickly in the sun before the kids arrived. I then measured up squares on white sheets of paper, and instructed Big Girl and others who wanted to join to draw something inside the squares.

I then cut out the drawings and writing and glued the different ones onto their personalised tiles, following the instructions from Homebase DIY and using a Homebase paint brush. After the glue had dried and the children had gone to bed, I took out the paint brush again and used PVA glue to paint over the entire tile. The next day I was surprised to see the coasters had a smooth and shiny finish, and they made cute little presents for the mums.

I had prepared pink gift bags with chocolate bunnies, and the girls had made cards with coloured cardboard and glitter pens to go with their gifts. This was super easy to do, and I felt the result was sweet.

Charming little presents for Mother’s Day!

Thank you to Homebase for inspiring us to make personalised coasters with the kids and sending some material. I’m sure we’ll be making more coasters going forward, and I’ve been surprised to see how inexpensive it is to buy basic tiles, which are actually brilliant for crafts activities
