Mini Mode children’s fashion show brings diverse forward-looking brands to London

‘Why didn’t you wear that earlier today?’

When Big Girl saw me coming down the stairs in our home the other Saturday evening, she looked puzzled. She couldn’t quite understand why I’d dressed up in the evening, but been in jeans earlier in the day. The two of us had been to the children’s fashion show Mini Mode – an event happening during London Fashion Week – and it was obvious that she had felt that I didn’t quite match up to the fashionable London crowd in attendance.

We had been invited to the Mini Mode industry show, and instead of logging around to various children’s Saturday morning sports activities in South West London we had jumped on the tube to Old Street and joined the group of designers, models, photographers, press and influencers waiting outside LSO St Luke’s.

The September event was the second Mini Mode show to showcase children’s fashion from around the world and new talent ready to take on the fashion industry. There was everything from big tulle statement dresses oozing Hollywood glam to Scandinavian-style unisex summer wear with a retro vibe. Six-year-old Big Girl kept giving me a nudge to take photos of the most colourful and glittery pieces, and the editorial look with mixed brands including BEBEBEBE and Liberated Folk, styled be Yvadney Davis and the model @Catherine_o, was one of the highlights (see photo at the top).

For me, some of the pieces that stood out included oversized styles and unique prints. I particularly liked a cute dress from French brand Koh Mabby, which looked both comfortable to wear and on trend. The SS18 Koh Mabby collection features shirts and dresses that can be worn two ways–with buttons either in front or at the back–and I’ve already been on their website to learn more about the brand (see photo from Koh Mabby collection from the catwalk).

After the Mini Mode catwalk show, we met up with Sarah, one of the sisters behind Singapore brand Hunter+Boo, which has a range of 100% organic cotton clothes for babies and children up to 5 years (see picture of baby romper from the catwalk). Sarah and her sister Beth grew up in Isle of Wight, but first launched their brand in Singapore, where Beth lives. Hunter+Boo is now available in the UK too via their online shop, and with nature-themed prints and soft organic cotton fabrics, the sweet range includes clothes that look comfortable to wear for active little ones.

Big Boy received a gorgeous set to review with short-sleeved top and leggings in a pretty blue sea-themed print that brings back memories of sand and sea. On its own, the top can easily be worn with navy or denim bottoms. I can’t wait to let him try his organic cotton outfit, and I’m sure he’ll appreciate that the label has been screen-printed onto the fabric, so there’s nothing he could find irritating. True kids fashion!
