0Nutri Kids books for teaching children about healthy eating
‘I want to eat spinach to get stronger! Can we have spinach on my birthday?’
Three-year-old Big Girl has decided she wants to eat spinach as of the day she turns four. She’s been slightly skeptical to greens, but since she eats most vegetables I haven’t been too stressed about it.
But more recently I’ve been contacted about several campaigns to encourage children to eat more vegetables, and it’s made me more aware of the importance of not only ensuring we eat healthy at home but also that they understand why I want them to eat different foods.
We’ve been reading the NutriKids books, which we received to review, and these small books by Sam Bourne have resulted in us talking more about the benefits of spinach, for example. Each book features a little story about how much a girl or a boy likes a specific vegetable or fruit, and it then goes on to offer nutritional advice and recipe suggestions.
The paperback books are very small (think Mr Men series), and the key points in the books are easy to remember for the target audience of under 7s. In the spinach book, for example, Sammy Spinach drops his toy box, and he then decides to eat spinach to get stronger–something I’m sure Big Girl will now never forget.
I like the idea behind NutriKids, which derives from the fact that healthy eating habits can be difficult to teach to older people, and it is particularly important to educate children from a young age.
With the help of colourful illustrations, activity sheets to print and short stories to read, NutriKids offers parents a creative way to get children to eat healthy!
