Preparing for baby’s first long-haul flight

trainersThe first time we were flying long haul with baby we brought 17 dummies. We were expecting the worse. We had a changing bag full of toys. We had 30 nappies tucked under the stroller, and I was travelling in trainers to make it easy for me to walk up and down the aisle with Baby Girl for long periods at a time.

But when we landed in Tampa after the nine-hour flight we couldn’t have been more excited. We had hardly needed anything from our emergency kit. Baby Girl had stuck to her normal routine, and we had managed to entertain her and keep her relatively happy when she had been awake.

Our two next long-haul flights were overnight, and they were very easy. Almost too easy, with Baby Girl sleeping for most of both trips.

It wasn’t before Monday’s daytime flight that Daddy T got dubious about flying with Baby Girl again. Despite having watched two movies, enjoyed a hot lunch and warm scones for afternoon tea, he still thought it had been a nightmare flight.

Baby Girl has clearly set the bar too high. She’s just been too good. She’s definitely flying again soon–even if Daddy T has been talking an awful lot about staycations in the last three days.

  1. Oh lovely! My cousin had the same experience, fully prepared (snacks, games, etc.) and didn’t need any of it. Better that way around than being completely stressed for hours on end pretending not to see all the disapproving stares! 🙂

Very true! I wouldn’t want to risk flying without dummies, toys, books etc – anything to keep baby entertained.. And happy! 🙂
