Puffin introduces online storytelling and draw-alongs

UK publishing house Puffin, which celebrates its 80th birthday this year, has launched an at-home activity programme for families, including storytelling, draw alongs, podcasts and home schooling material.

From last week, Puffin started releasing story time videos at 3.30pm on weekdays, and these can be viewed on Puffin Books’ YouTube, Instagram and Facebook channels.

On Mondays and Fridays there’s story time and draw-alongs aimed at children aged 5 and under, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sam Copeland is reading his hilarious book Charlie Changes into a Chicken, recommended for over 7s.

Wednesdays on the Puffin channel is all about story starters for ages 6 to 11, with authors reading extracts from their books to help children identify books they would like to read themselves.

Children who enjoy draw-alongs should also look out for videos to learn how to draw favourite book characters on the Puffin channel, with one current video being a tutorial with children’s book illustrator Nick Sharratt, who’s teaching viewers to draw Daisy from Kes Gray’s book series.

Next, Puffin is launching a new three-part Puffin podcast series with comedian, children’s author and YouTube personality Humza Arshad. Listeners can expect funny stories, games and jokes in the podcasts aimed at unlocking creativity, taking stories to imaginations worldwide and inspiring children to dream big. The first podcast is scheduled to go live on 19 April.

In addition, Puffin has revamped its Puffin Schools website, making more Puffin books and resources accessible, including writing prompts, activity ideas and picture book packs. Puffin Schools has also partnered with other learning resource providers, and the publisher is, for example, now providing educational resources for Twinkl’s home learning hub, and providing content for Teach Primary’s ‘Author in Your Classroom Podcast’ series, which is aimed at inspiring children to write their own stories.
