Review: Frugi organic children’s spring/summer collection for colour and functionality

In a private dining room at the back of The Delaunay restaurant in Aldwych, I recently explored the colourful new spring/summer collection by Frugi. I had been invited to the breakfast to find out what’s new from the brand, which prides itself on offering soft organic and hard-wearing children’s clothes.

The new collection in vivid colours takes inspiration from Japan, particularly the Ikigai concept, which means ‘a reason for being’ and is focused on what makes us happy.

Prints feature bullet trains and parasols, which are often associated with Japan, as well as colourful rainbows and construction vehicles in a nod to Tokyo. There are also mountains and sunflowers, inspired by Japan’s Mount Fuji and the country’s sunflower fields, and prints and appliqué featuring Sika Deer, known as the Japanese Deer.

Rain or Shine Suit £36

The outerwear in the collection is made with recycled bottles, and a size 5-6 jacket is made with around 36 bottles. For young girls, I especially liked the look of the Rain or Shine suit with a bunny print (£36).

Many of the pieces have a practical feel–also the everyday summer clothes-and some are reversible, such as dresses and shorts.

For young children, I particularly like the searsucker style dress for girls and dungaree for boys with red stripes and sea-themed appliqués.

Explorer shorts £26

For older boys, the navy Explorer shorts (£26) with lobster print would be a smart and versatile summer staple piece, and I also like the bicycle print Leap About legging (from £17) in navy, which feels soft and comfortable for active boys.

With dungarees being a favourite with many girls, parents should look out for the thin Lexi linen dungaree (£32), which is ideal for summer with 3/4 wide legs and come in blue–almost a blue-green colour–with a polka dot print. I also love the look of the pretty Maya dungaree (£32), which features a cute bunny print.

Part of the Frugi collection is already out, and there is another drop in March.
