Review: Gro-hush baby calmer for soothing baby at night

‘Wow, this wasn’t actually too bad. Baby has done pretty well tonight.’

Some mornings I’ve woken up quite happy. After trying out a range of different tactics for settling Baby Boy quickly after a feed to minimise the time I have to be up in the middle of the night, I’ve found something that works for me: Feed. Burp. Dummy. Gro-hush.

After putting baby back in his cot bed after a mid-night feed, I turn on Gro-hush, a baby calmer introduced by The Gro Company last year, which I’ve received to review.

Gro-hush is a baby calmer with soothing sounds–three white noises which are often comforting  to young babies and also used to help adults sleep. The white noises on Gro-hush includes heart beat, waves and pouring rain, and Baby Boy seems to like the sound of crashing waves, which is what I now use as part of my baby routine.

Gro-hush (£24.99) is designed to be held by a parent and it has soft cushioning, allowing a parent to stroke baby with it and not have the whole room listening to the sounds, but I mostly leave it on my bedside table where baby can still hear the sound. We both tend to be fast asleep before it automatically turns itself off after 10 minutes.

I never used white noises for soothing Baby Girl, but we had bought a teddy with sound functions that time around. I now like the fact that Gro-hush is small, so I’m not worried about being dependent on it, as we can pack it away in a drawer and it comes with a convenient cover, making it convenient for travelling. The buttons light up, so it’s also easy to use in the dark at night.

The size, light, cover and sound functions make Gro-hush a practical and easy-to-use baby calmer–and the truth is that sometimes anything that can help a new mum get a bit of extra sleep and energy is much appreciated.
