Review: New entertaining LEGO Batman Movie sets celebrate film release

Clayface Splat Attack LEGO‘Who’s done this?’

Daddy T looked very worried the other day. Someone had moved a few LEGO bricks from the kitchen table where he and Big Girl were working on finishing The Scuttler–a new LEGO set we received celebrating the release of the LEGO Batman Movie. The LEGO Batman Movie rolls into cinemas nationwide tomorrow, and we’re all feeling very prepared after reading about it and building some of the new LEGO sets.

Daddy T has immersed himself in LEGO to build the sets we received to review and spent every spare moment with Big Girl on weekends building away. On Monday he was up until 1am building LEGO, and the next day we missed his 6.15am alarm.

For us, LEGO remains something Daddy T and Big Girl both enjoy, and the new sets manage to appeal to both boys and girls, featuring some pretty cool mini figures. Big Girl is in charge of building all the mini figures in the sets, and put together some pieces here and there while Daddy T is the project manager.

LEGO Batman Movie Scuttler

The Scuttler (£84.99), recommended for ages 9-14, comes with six mini figures recognised from the new LEGO Batman Movie and makes for a great project to spread over several days. It features a lot of small pieces, which older children and grown-up LEGO fans will like. It also took Daddy T and Big Girl a couple of building sessions to do Clayface Splat Attack, which has many small pieces in a similar colour and two mini figures (£29.99). For slightly younger builders, however, there’s a fun little set for ages 6-12–The Joker Balloon Escape (£11.99)–which features the Joker and his balloon bouquet backpack and Batman with his cape.

The Lego Batman Movie Sets Review

The great thing about all these new sets is that the LEGO Batman Movie site features clips from the movie to go with each set, which puts them into context and is great for encouraging more play with the finished sets. We can watch the dual between Batman and Clayface on the site, and see how the Joker has a face-off with Batman at a power plant – the theme of The Joker Balloon Escape set.

LEGO Harlequin LED LiteAnother new Lego Batman Movie product I’ve been excited about receiving is the book called the LEGO Batman Movie The Essential Guide (DK, £9.99). This colourful hardback features a guide to the characters and places visited in the film, and even features a spread with Batman’s costumes, which gives us a glimpse of how entertaining the film looks. I think the book will be great for getting children familiar with the plot, superheroes and villains before seeing the film, or more as a souvenir to enjoy after watching it.

I can’t wait to take the kids to see the film, and when we do go I know Big Girl will want to reclaim the new Harlequin key light we received from her brother’s backpack. The fab light-up bag charms (£9.99) of the LEGO characters from the film are also fun accessories that make cool gifts, and I’ve already spotted another little boy with one of these.

Bring on the LEGO Batman Movie release tomorrow!
