0Review: Primary Science Lab Set from Learning Resources for making science fun for kids
‘I want to go home and do science!’
When four-year-old Big Girl received the Primary Science Lab set to review from Learning Resources she was practically skipping across the school yard in excitement because she could go home and start experimenting. I had no idea a science set would be such a hit, and when I’d first read about it I had been unsure if it was something she would be into or not.
I shouldn’t have had any doubts though. Big Girl recognised the test tubes, magnifying glass and tweezers from nursery school and could talk me through the first experiment.
The Primary Science Lab Set (£25) comes with science tools designed for little hands and 10 activity cards clearly stating what is needed to complete different experiments and what science concept each experiment explores.
There were several experiments we could complete with minimum effort, as the bits and bobs we needed were things we had around the house, such as food colouring, coins, cotton balls, raisins, spices and perfume.
We started with colour mixing–using some food colouring as per the instruction and some paint, which was what Big Girl claimed she had done before. She loves pouring liquids from one glass to another, so creating new colours by mixing different liquids and shaking test tubes was right up her street.
The next activity on our list was an experiment exploring the concept of sink and float, but the activity cards also include slightly more advanced experiments, such as a volcano project with bicarbonate soda. So far I feel just looking through the rest of them have helped me gain an understanding of how to introduce the science to someone at Big Girl’s age.
The set is designed for children aged 4 to 8, and I think it has been a good fit for Big Girl, who started school in September. It comes with plastic beakers, magnifying glass, funnel, pipette, flask, tweezers, goggles, large and small test tubes with lids and stands, and she can use all the equipment without help.
The Primary Science Lab Set is all about making science fun and being able to do experiments even on the kitchen table at home. Pretty unique!
