0Review: Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas at Lyric Hammersmith for a memorable Christmas show
‘And then Father Christmas gets stuck in the chimney!’
Big Girl was thrilled when I told her we had been invited to go see Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas at Lyric Hammersmith on Saturday morning, and she instantly started retelling the story based on what she could remember from last year.
Father Christmas in the chimney has clearly made an impression, and I think this is just one of several fun moments that keep a young audience entertained by the stage adaptation of the classic Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas.
The show tells the story of Father Christmas waking up to the busy Christmas Eve and not enjoying the workload and cold weather, and I think seeing the show is a wonderful way to introduce the concept of Father Christmas to young children.
It is performed in an intimate venue at Lyric Hammersmith, making it ideal for young theatregoers, who will also appreciate the enchanting set with chimneys for Father Christmas to climb on, charming puppets and live sounds and music.
With lots of giggles and even some jokes directed at the grown-ups in the audience, it’s hard not to be wowed by Father Christmas, particularly when Father Christmas rides in his sleigh with his reindeer in the snowy weather.
For us and several other families I know, it’s become a Christmas family tradition to go see this show, and I’ll be gutted when the children are too old to go. I may have watched the performance five times by now, but I don’t tire of Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas.
