Review: The Band at New Wimbledon Theatre for an evening to Never Forget

On Tuesday I found myself whispering to Daddy T: ‘This is good.’

We were half-way through the first act of The Band, which we had been invited to review at New Wimbledon Theatre, and I was beaming with excitement.

The musical, which features the band that won last year’s BBC reality show Let It Shine, is based on Take That songs and written by Tim Firth. It tells the story of a group of 16-year-old girls who love ‘The Band’ and are hoping to meet their heroes. After life takes them in different directions the girls lose touch, but they reunite in their 40s to have a second attempt at fulfilling their teenage dream.

The Band is cleverly included throughout, and the musical features all the Take That classics we were expecting. I was impressed with some of the powerful voices, harmonies and sleek choreography, and Never Forget was one of the highlights for me.

I was also surprised by the story, as it had me both crying and laughing, and in my view, the combination of all the hits from the chart-topping boy band and the unexpected story made this musical stand out.

A great evening out for parents planning a date night this half-term!

The Band: Take That’s New Musical is playing at New Wimbledon Theatre until 27 October. The running time is 2 hours and 15 minutes.
