Review: Where Does It Come From? for practical and traceable children’s clothes

Freya_Pinafore_Where_Does_It_Come_From‘I want to wear my butterfly dress!’

Baby Girl hadn’t forgotten. She had been awake for less than five minutes, but she had already decided what to wear. It was all about her new butterfly print dress from Where Does It Come From?, which we had received as a sample.

When I first heard about children’s clothing brand Where Does It Come From?, I was intrigued to hear there was a brand with a special code on a clothing label, offering parents the opportunity to find out where the clothes come from. I’m naturally curious, so if this had been the case with all Baby Girl’s clothes, I would have gone straight online to read the story about every new item.

That’s at least what I did after receiving the butterfly dress. I looked up the code in the ‘Trace’ section on the Where Does It Come From? website and found out the Freya Pinafore Dress I was holding had been made from cotton grown in Gujarat in India. I read quotes from spinners enjoying the work environment where they were spinning the yarn used in the dresses; I learnt how quality was a key focus for the weavers and much more. It’s the first time I’ve had access to this level of information for a piece of clothing.

The Where Does It Come From? range of ethical children’s clothes features denim jeans, dresses and jackets, and the clothes are handmade. I think the design of the pinafore dress, which comes in a variety of prints, makes this a particularly practical piece of clothing for little girls.

I first thought size 4 years looked big for Baby Girl, who is two years and eight months old, but the dress has poppers to adjust the length of the shoulder straps, making it easy to get it to fit. I could see her wearing the dress for years, as when she gets too tall to wear it as a dress, she can wear it as a top with tights instead.

The pinafore–made from a fabric that seems hard-wearing–can also be worn in winter if paired with tights and a long-sleeved top. The dress is machine-washable, and I plan to wash it separately at first due to the dye in the denim trim and denim shoulder straps.

A fun and functional dress!
