The best nuts and dried fruit snacks for active London children

When I pick up my dried apricots and nuts from Bayley & Sage, Baby Girl instantly starts asking for a box too. To avoid me ending up with nothing and her taking everything, I usually get one for each of us, and that’s why I wanted to ask nutritionist Victoria Wells at Emma Cannon’s Fertility Rooms in Sloane Square for advice on what I should choose as snacks for my active little one.

I had been invited to see Victoria to discuss nutrition for mums and children, and she explained that children love snacking on dried fruit, as it satisfies sweet cravings.

The insoluble fibre helps the digestive tract to operate smoothly and promote regular bowel movement, she said, and dried fruit count towards the recommended 5 a day. It’s still worth being aware of the higher concentration of sugar compared to fresh fruit, which is why it is recommended to eat dried fruits in moderation. Victoria explained, however, that eating nuts and seeds at the same time helps control the blood sugar spikes.

Here are some suggestions from Victoria of what to include in a mix for children without nut allergies who are old enough to eat nuts without nuts being a choking hazard:

Almonds and cashew nuts
Almonds and cashews provide calcium that is required for strong teeth and bones.

Raisins
Juicy raisins are high in fibre and a source of potassium, iron, calcium and antioxidants.

Cherries
Sour cherries have a higher antioxidant level than other cherries and also melatonin that can encourage sound sleep.
