03 things to do in London with kids this weekend
Visit The Museum of Architecture’s Gingerbread City at Victoria & Albert Museum
At Victoria & Albert Museum it’s the last weekend of an impressive gingerbread house display, which can be exciting to visit for both young and old. The Museum of Architecture’s Gingerbread City at Victoria & Albert Museum celebrates the imagination of architectures and designers, and when we visited over Christmas it was a hit with the whole family. The exhibition is in one room, and we were amazed with the creativity. A backyard cinema, a ski slope, a pretty park–there were so many little details that we kept wanting to photograph! Entry is free to V&A members, but other tickets appeared to be sold out online when I checked.
Go ice skating
It is still possible to enjoy ice skating in London, but for many ice rinks, this is the last weekend to skate for this season. I just noticed, however, that Natural History Museum Ice Rink is now open until 20 January, so families that want to carry on enjoying the winter sport in the city can head to this popular venue. There is a limited number of penguin skate aids at Natural History Museum Ice Rink, which cost £5 to rent and are available on a first come, first served basis from the skate hire counter.
Learn about Christmas traditions at Hampton Court Palace
I’ve long had Hampton Court Palace on my list of places I’ve wanted to visit, and I recently took up a membership to the Historic Royal Palaces, which includes Hampton Court. This weekend marks the ending of the Hampton Court Christmas events, and I particularly wanted to go now, as visiting at Christmas time has been recommended to me in the past. For families looking for a last Christmassy family day out, the programme at Hampton Court Palace for this weekend includes carol singing, Christmas stories and opportunities to learn about Christmas cooking and traditions from the past.
Other events worth mentioning are Disney on Ice presents Dream Big, which we reviewed last week, and Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, which is also open until Sunday 6 January when they are hosting a Family Fun Day.
