0When toddler struggles with transitions
Baby Girl is not big on transitions. That’s one of the things Daddy T and I picked up when attending a very informative parenting evening with The Parent Practice at family club Purple Dragon the other week. But yesterday I think we found a solution to all our problems. The only issue now is that this solution wasn’t exactly what I had in mind.
The challenge has been that Baby Girl doesn’t like leaving places where she loves being, and since she’s generally a happy 19-month old her list of favourite places is pretty long. When she doesn’t want to leave somewhere, her legs tend to go jelly, she’ll arch her back and scream loudly, and this happens every time I pick her up in nursery, for example.
Except yesterday. Yesterday, she had made a cake in nursery, which she could take home with her– all very exciting. With her carrying the little cake, we could walk out of nursery without lying on the pavement screaming in our usual spot. In fact, we made it all the way to the car, where we stopped for a little bit of cake. Baby Girl was all smiles.
After that, we went to family club Purple Dragon to play and again she had a little bit of cake when leaving, meaning we could have a tantrum-free walk back to the car.
Now I just hope this new strategy works when I swap cake for carrots. Yummy!
