0Unique kids summer events in London in August
Chelsea Quavers Summer Workshop in Chelsea
When I walked into the Chelsea Quavers Summer Workshop one day in Chelsea in July (see picture above) there was a nine-year-old on drums jamming with a pianist, a walk-on piano by the registration desk, and colourful cartoons drawn by summer workshop attendees displayed on a side table. I was truly impressed with the talent in the room and the welcoming atmosphere at the camp, where children were not only doing a range of musical puzzles and activities but also had time to stop to applaud each other’s achievements. The July workshops–which had attendees coming from everywhere from Scotland to Hong Kong–were oversubscribed, and Chelsea Quavers has now added one day in August for the popular summer programme. The Chelsea Quavers Summer Workshop for children aged 4 to 12 in August will take place on Tuesday 18 August, and this one-day music workshop will cover general musicianship, percussive performance–hand bells and glockenspiel–singing, musical games and activities.
Kids Cooking Club at Whole Foods Market Fulham
On Wednesday 5 August and Tuesday 25 August Whole Foods Market Fulham is hosting Kids Cooking Club sessions, where children can make and bake different goodies using Cookie Crumbles kits. For the first session the theme is summer baking, with recipes including blueberry muffins and 2-ingredients cookies, and for the second session the theme is back to school baking with Cookie Crumbles. The classes are aimed at children aged 4 and over, and the young bakers must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets, which include a fruit smoothie and a goodie bag, can be booked in-store and online and cost £10 per child plus booking fee.
Summer Cineclub, including baby cinema, at Unicorn Theatre
London’s children’s theatre Unicorn Theatre is hosting Summer Cineclub, a pop-up cinema, from 3 to 15 August, screening grown-up films like Jurassic World and Pitch Perfect 2 for parents and babies at 10 in the mornings; family favourites like Shaun the Sheep Movie and Mary Poppins at 12.30pm; and cult classics like E.T. and The Breakfast Club at 4pm. Tickets for parent and baby movie mornings are £9 and include a hot drink and croissant, and the other tickets, which include a popcorn treat, are £4 per person, or £7 for one adult and one child.
