0Visiting Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams at the V&A with kids
It’s not often I find myself sitting on the kitchen table drawing any more, but after visiting the new V&A exhibition Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams that is what I was seriously tempted to do.
We were wowed by this sensational exhibition–which can inspire both young and old–and I wasn’t surprised when I read earlier today that it has been extended until 1 September. In fact, it was sold out when I looked at ticket availability before this extended opening.
The popular exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the history of the Christian Dior fashion house, starting with how it all began, the New Look designed by Christian Dior and the stylish and flattering dresses with nipped in waistlines.
Visitors continue on through the times, discovering how different cultures and trends have inspired collections and styles have impacted 20th century fashion.
For families visiting with children, I think the way the exhibition has been curated makes it fascinating for anyone starting to develop an interest in design. To make the visit fun for children too, talking points could include how history and cultures may have influenced the fashion design, and I would also point out some of the extremely colourful and wild looks by John Galliano. We were fascinated by the dress with hair clips and the red ballgown with a regal feel, which can both be seen in one of my favourite galleries that showcase the different styles of the creative directors leading the fashion house to where it is today.
After leaving this room, visitors walk into a white room representing the Christian Dior workshop. There’s a video about the production, and I think this room can be particularly interesting for families to learn about how the dresses have been produced.
Another highlight includes the beautifully curated ballroom with changing lighting. Take a seat and experience the fairytale atmosphere as the lights are dimmed and the dresses sparkle like princess ballgowns. For families with children who are Harry Potter fans, don’t leave without seeing the black, chic outfit worn by Emma Watson near the exit.
In the gift shop, there is a limited selection of souvenirs that will interest children, but you can’t go wrong with a blank sketch book featuring Christian Dior sketches on the cover (see picture above). After seeing sketches on display throughout the exhibition too, there’s no stopping a budding fashion designer to get started on creating the next New Look!
