What to wear when flying with baby or toddler

SkyBabyI remember having a book about how to dress for different occasions, but although the book was pretty comprehensive there was definitely not a section on what to wear when flying with baby or toddler.

After flying with Baby Girl more than 30 times in the past 14 months, I’ve come up with my own list:

Multi-functional clothes

  • a long cardigan can be useful when you want to make it dark for a tired little one trying to fall asleep in your lap, or when you’re breastfeeding and want to be discreet
  • a large scarf can double as a blanket, breastfeeding cover and blinds
  • a nursing bra and nursing top are pretty essential for mums planning to breastfeed on the go, but also worth wearing if there’s a risk you might end up breastfeeding on the journey even if it’s not exactly part of plan A

Keep it simple

  • shoes that are easy to take off make it quicker to get through security when you’re asked to remove your shoes, and boots can be difficult when travelling alone with baby
  • avoid big jewellery and belts that could cause delays in security
  • avoid long necklaces and necklaces that could be uncomfortable for your little one to lean up against

Prepare for the worst

  • wear layers and ideally keep spare clothes – at least a top – in your hand luggage in case of vomiting or drinks  being spilt on you
