0When to move from spoon to fork
– He eats with a fork already?
– Yes, he’s been doing it for a long time
I was shocked. The little one I spotted eating with a stainless steel fork was 17 months old, and at the time Baby Girl was 12 months, so I was truly impressed.
I wasn’t sure if it was one of those things that seemed more impressive because I didn’t know what to expect five months on, but thinking back, I’m still impressed with the little boy.
I practically forgot to introduce the fork concept. I kept giving Baby Girl a spoon to eat with at home, and it’s not before more recent months Baby Girl has started asking for both spoon and fork at mealtimes.
That’s also why I now asked Oxo Tot to review their cutlery set with a fork and a spoon. I’m not sure if there’s a right time to move on from only eating with a spoon to using a fork as well, but when making the transition, I think Oxo Tot has a brilliant product, which I really should have introduced much earlier as it’s suitable from 12 months and up.
I like tableware from Oxo Tot, and in terms of cutlery, my issue with some other brands has been that some seem quite small and some come with plastic forks, which can appear to be difficult to use.
The Oxo Tot spoon and fork are practical because they have soft, non-slip, curved grips to avoid them sliding into plates, but they are still in stainless steel and look more like ‘normal’ cutlery. They are easy for Baby Girl to hold and use, but the fork tines don’t have sharp edges, so it feels safer for her to use this than our other cutlery. I think this is a really well-designed cutlery set, and I could see us buying more of these sets for our next one.
The Oxo Tot cutlery also comes with matching plates, and the Oxo Tot training plate, suitable from 6 months, has a removable curved ring, making it easy for children to guide food onto the plate. The small plate, which grows with the child, can also be used without the ring when it’s no longer needed
