When toddler starts speaking French

‘Listen to her. She knows how to say it.’

For some time now, I’ve known that Baby Girl would eventually speak some French, and I’ve been looking forward to having her help me get by on holiday, as I don’t speak the language myself. But I always thought this was a bit further down the line when she was learning French in school.

That’s why I was surprised when it turned out I was clearly underestimating 22-month old Baby Girl’s language skills. There’s apparently no need to wait. Baby Girl is already better than me in French, and even I can admit that her pronunciation of ‘au revoir’ definitely beats mine.

When I took her for a long weekend to France, she started greeting shopkeepers in French on the third day of our mini-break, and when I suggested she could say ‘Bye, Bye’ she chose to say ‘au revoir’ instead.

No wonder nurseries offer language classes and some families opt for private language tuition for little ones. I continue to be amazed with how much toddlers pick up at an early age.

I’m truly impressed, Baby Girl!
